Sierra Nevada Brewing
"The overall business climate is strong, manufacturing space is reasonable, and local government is pro-business"
Many businesses have the option of locating anywhere. Others are bound by proximity to a natural resource. For a brewer, this means an abundant source of clean, fresh-tasting water. Butte County offers one of the most abundant and cleanest water supplies in the western United States, but it's not the only advantage available to food and beverage processors.
Ken Grossman discovered the virtues of Butte County while he was still a student at California State University, Chico. Like many of his classmates, he fell in love with the area and wanted to stay. "Butte County offers an excellent quality-of- life," says Grossman. "We have good schools, good parks and we're close to a number of recreational areas."
Grossman started Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 1980, with the goal of brewing the finest ales and lagers possible using age-old, European brewing traditions. Business has been on the upswing ever since, and his success can be measured by the numerous trophies awarded to his beers.
In two short decades, the company has grown from a small, local microbrewer to one of the top specialty-brewers in the country, requiring 250,000 sq. ft. of production space. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company currently offers seven varieties of beer for regular widespread distribution and several seasonal varieties, and the company has become well established in the marketplace.
With distribution points located in 48 states, Grossman's business would be welcome just about anywhere. He stays in Butte County because, "the overall business climate is good and we enjoy a high quality-of-life," without giving up business essentials. His location allows distribution access via Highway 99, one of the state's major thoroughfares, or nearby Interstate-5, the main artery for the entire West Coast.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has discovered the unbeatable mix of resources and incentives Butte County offers to food and beverage processors to help them meet the consumer's demand for more variety and higher quality at reasonable prices. The advantages to having a Butte County address have never been better‹an affordable and stable labor force, abundant supply of crystal clear water, cooperative government, streamlined permitting, easy access to markets, lower operating costs, room for expansion, competitive land costs, and a high quality-of-life for all employees. These are all important factors for companies like Sierra Nevada, whose dedication to age-old production methods require an added measure of labor and expense.
"The overall business climate is strong, and manufacturing space is reasonable, and local government is pro-business," says Grossman. "The area offers a good work force; and with the college, you can always find a good group of people to pick from locally."
Grossman's venture is also one of the top Butte County visitor destinations. The company's Brew Pub is the perfect place to enjoy gourmet food and sample specialty ales and lagers‹ try Celebration Ale during the holiday season, Summer Fest in the summer, and kick off the New Year with Big Foot Ale.
