Compac Engineering
"Butte County -a great place to raise a family and grow a business" For people who enjoy outdoor recreation, there is no better place than Butte County. Greg Jones says his family has been vacationing in the area for nearly half a century. And it was the family's love of the area that initially prompted them to consider moving their company, Compac Engineering, from its base in the San Francisco Bay area to the community of Paradise.
Compac Engineering is a family business manufacturing industrial sensors that measure liquid levels, flow or temperatures. The sensors have a variety of applications, ranging from coin-operated water purification dispensers to kidney dialysis machines -anyplace where liquid measurement comes into play.
The company, which has been in business for 35 years, made the move in 1979. Though the primary reason for the move to Butte County was "to improve the owner's quality-of-life," there were other reasons as well. It was becoming harder to hire and maintain qualified employees.
"We saw an opportunity to locate in an area with a good labor pool," says Jones, who serves as the company's marketing and sales manager. "And land costs are much more reasonable in comparison."
He says his family also felt that as a manufacturer, Compac Engineering would be an asset in a small town, offering local residents an attractive place to work. It's been a win-win situation. Compac Engineering has enjoyed a low turnover rate since it relocated to Butte County -most of the company's key people have been on the payroll for years.
And the company continues to grow. In the two decades since Compac Engineering moved to Paradise, the company from its original leased location to its own facility. The company is in the process of expanding its current facility and plans for an additional building are on the drawing board.
Butte County helps ease a company's growing pains through its willingness to work with a business during the permitting and construction phases. Butte also offers the utility, communication and transportation infrastructure necessary to meet current and future manufacturing needs. Though Compac Engineering is based in a small community, its customers are located throughout the world.
" Butte County's infrastructure allows you to conduct business on an international level," says Jones. "And, it's cost-effective from the standpoint of land, labor and the cost-of-living," says Jones. "Land is more competitively priced... we've found an available and willing labor pool... and our families enjoy a high quality-of-life."
In addition to the variety of recreational pursuits, Jones' points to the cost-of-living advantages to be found in Butte County for company principles. He particularly notes the difference in housing costs between Butte County and the San Francisco Bay area, where prices for comparable homes can be three times as high.
"Plus," he adds, "there's no traffic, the air is clean, and the people are friendly."
Butte County -great place to raise a family and grow a business.
